Block storage

In block storage, goods are not stored on shelves, but stacked directly on top of each other on the floor. This usually requires the goods in question to be stored on pallets or in stackable containers. Floor storage is a very cost-effective form of storage, but is not always suitable due to its specific advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of a block storage system

Setting up a block storage system incurs only low investment costs, as no shelving or storage and retrieval machines are required.

The absence of shelving and other equipment is also the reason for the high flexibility of a block storage system. If the existing storage area is to be changed, often only the storage space markers and storage signs need to be rearranged.

Disadvantages of a block storage system

The biggest disadvantage of a block storage system is the poor access to the goods stored first, as new goods always have to be placed on top of (or around) the existing goods. This makes it impossible to apply the first-in, first-out (FIFO) principle. This is particularly important for perishable goods. However, block storage is also usually not practical for a spare parts or consignment warehouse.

How a block line storage system simplifies access

However, this disadvantage can be at least partially compensated for by dividing the blocks into individual storage rows. The storage rows are usually accessible from three sides, making it easier to access the goods. This arrangement is known as block line storage.

However, regardless of how block storage is organized in individual cases, one thing must always be observed: The maximum permissible load of the lowest layer must not be exceeded for all variants of block storage. Various safety aspects must also be taken into account. A block storage system cannot therefore grow to any height.

Which goods are suitable for block storage?

Irrespective of the possible advantages and disadvantages, it is always important to consider whether the goods in question are suitable for this type of storage before setting up a block storage system.

This is usually possible with stackable containers such as crates and barrels. Pallets are also very suitable for block storage as long as the goods on them are stable and not pressure-sensitive.

Possibilities and limits of block storage

However, even non-stackable goods can often be collected on pallets or in pallet cages and stored in a block storage system. Some goods, such as tires, can also be stacked completely without load devices. In practice, of course, it is not just a question of whether a good can be stacked. Goods often have logistical requirements that a block storage system cannot fulfill.

For example, perishable goods that have to be handled according to the FIFO principle are not suitable for block storage. The same applies to a large, heterogeneous range in which each item is only stored in small quantities and must be easily accessible.

Conclusion: Use block storage as a useful addition

In fact, only in a few cases is it necessary to store large quantities of single-variety goods. These circumstances mean that block storage is often only a supplement to other types of storage.
