Dimensions and types in container transport

Containers are standardized, rectangular transport devices that play an indispensable role in logistics, especially in maritime transport. They enable the efficient and safe container transportation of all types of goods over long distances. Container dimensions are specified in units such as TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit), FEU (Forty-foot Equivalent Unit) and HEU (Highcube Equivalent Unit).

The variety of transport containers

The container types differ in terms of their design and area of use. For example, there are tank containers for liquids, refrigerated containers for temperature-sensitive goods, flat rack containers for bulky cargo and open top containers for goods that have to be loaded from above. The different container types and their specific container dimensions enable optimum adaptation to individual transport requirements.

1. Standard container (Dry Cargo Container – DC)

The standard container is the most commonly used type of container. It is used to transport “general cargo”, i.e. goods of all kinds. Variants such as the General Purpose container (GP) in 20 foot (approx. 6 m) or 40 foot (approx. 12 m) lengths and the High Cube container (HC) with increased internal height offer sufficient space for large loads.

2. Open top container (OT)

Open Top containers are containers without a fixed roof, that are ideal for bulky goods such as machines or vehicles that need to be loaded from above. To protect the load, this type of container can be closed with a tarpaulin as a roof. Container variants such as the OTHC (Open Top High Cube) offer more storage space and the HHT (Half Height Open Top) is designed for easier loading and unloading.

3. Flat rack container (FR)

Flat Rack containers have no roof or side walls, just a floor and a frame. They are perfect for container transportation of oversized or bulky goods such as construction machinery or plant components. Variants such as the Platform Container with wooden floor and the Collapsible Flat Rack Container for space-saving storage are available.

4. Refrigerated container (reefer)

Reefer containers are temperature-controlled containers for the transportation of perishable goods such as food and medicines. There are different types of refrigerated containers (reefers), such as standard reefers, MAP reefers for special atmospheres and high-humidity reefers for moist goods.

5. Tank container (tank)

Tank containers are tailored to the individual requirements of transporting liquid goods. Whether chemicals, paints or foodstuffs – we offer the right solution for every type of freight. Container sizes and dimensions for container transportation

A TEU is equivalent to a 20-foot container with internal dimensions of approx. 5.89 × 2.35 × 2.39 meters.
An FEU is twice as long and measures approx. 12.03 × 2.35 × 2.39 meters inside.
HEU containers are around 50 cm higher and therefore offer more storage space. The interior height of an HEU container is approx. 2.89 meters.

The outer dimensions of the containers are slightly larger than the inner dimensions due to the wall thickness. To choose the right container size for your cargo, it is important to know the inside and outside dimensions exactly.

The standard dimensions of 20 feet (approx. 6 m) and 40 feet (approx. 12 m) are common worldwide and enable easy handling between different means of transport.
