Glossary

Milkrun

Milkrun or milk bottle concept refers to a logistics concept in which new material is only delivered in the quantity previously consumed and the empty containers are collected at the same time. The batch sizes must be defined in advance and communicated to the supplier.

The Milkrun Concept in Practice

In a milk run, several customers or destinations are usually supplied by a vehicle that follows a predefined route for this purpose. At the same time, any empty containers are taken back. This ensures a constant supply and disposal, and partial loads can be delivered particularly economically. However, this requires that material consumption on the recipient side is as constant as possible.

Due to the complexity of the requirements, the milk run concept is particularly suitable for areas characterized by constant demand or easily predictable capacity utilization. This applies above all to modern production lines. Here, milk runs can be combined particularly efficiently with the
Just-in-Time-Concept .

Milk runs in procurement logistics and production

Milk runs can generally take place within or between companies. In some cases, different types are combined. This means that both the delivery to the company and the distribution within the company are carried out according to the milk run concept. In this case, a warehouse usually serves as an intermediate station.

  • Inter-company milk runs typically serve to transport goods from multiple locations (e.g., different suppliers) to a single location, such as a warehouse. They are considered procurement logistics or distribution logistics.
  • Internal milk runs, on the other hand, usually transport goods from one location to various destinations, such as different points on a production line within the company. They are therefore part of production logistics.

Historical origin: Why is the term “milk run” used in logistics?

Finally, let’s take a look at the origin of the term, because the term “milk run” may seem strange at first in the context of modern industrial logistics. However, it becomes clear when you look at the historical origin of the concept.

In the past, it was common practice, especially in England and the USA, to have fresh milk delivered by a milkman. If he saw an empty bottle outside a front door on his daily round, he would take it with him and leave a full one in its place. The name was transferred to logistics along with the concept.
