Glossary
Line feeding refers to the coordinated supply of required parts and components to assembly lines in terms of time and quantity (and possibly also sequence). It is part of intralogistics and as such is often handled by logistics service providers.
If a product is offered in a large number of variants, the necessary components for all variants must be kept in stock in conventional production logistics. The excessive warehousing required for this not only requires a large amount of space, but also entails a noticeable capital commitment as well as significant storage risks and costs.
Line feeding offers a cost-efficient solution to this problem. The required components and assemblies are delivered directly to the assembly line. This eliminates the need to store large quantities of components. There are two main variants of line feeding: Just-In-Time and Just-In-Sequence.
Just-in-time is the most common variant of line feeding. The process was developed in the middle of the 20th century by experts at a Japanese car manufacturer to ensure the precise supply of production goods to the production lines.
The advantages of this type of line feeding soon became apparent. The JIT process was responsible for Asian car manufacturers being able to hold their own against their larger and economically stronger US competitors.
A variant of line feeding that places even greater demands on logistics is just-in-sequence delivery. As with JIT processes, the required components are delivered at the right time and in the right quantity and also in the right sequence. This process is therefore primarily used for the final assembly of highly varied products.
This variant of line feeding was developed for the automotive industry, where today – due to the countless configuration options – no two vehicles are the same. For a functioning JIS supply, the logistics service provider is informed of the sequence of vehicles scheduled for final assembly.
This then sorts the required assemblies (e.g. doors or exterior mirrors) in the same order and delivers them at the right time. The final assembly staff then only have to remove the pre-sorted parts from the transport packaging one by one and install them.
LGI supports your production with practical solutions for inline feeding. Our optimized processes guarantee maximum efficiency for line feeding in your production. We not only reliably ensure that the right components are available at the right time in your production, but also take care of the disposal of empty containers.
