Transport logistics

What is transport logistics? By definition, this term covers all logistical processes related to transport. In principle, this means moving the required goods and quantities to the desired location and bridging the corresponding spatial distances. However, this also includes controlling transports, selecting the means of transport, monitoring processes, ensuring the flow of data and ongoing optimisation.

A professional transport logistics company organises this process as efficiently as possible. This means, among other things:

  • Determining the best routes according to delivery deadlines
  • Ensuring maximum utilisation of the freight space
  • Protecting the goods as best as possible during transport
  • Carrying out the transport at an efficient cost
  • The aim of transport logistics is always to optimise transport chains, including loading and unloading, capacity utilisation, handover and identification.

The tasks of a transport logistician are therefore extremely varied and complex. When choosing the mode of transport, advantages and disadvantages must be weighed up between road (lorry), rail (goods train), waterways (sea or inland waterway vessel) and air (aircraft). In addition, there are important planning tasks such as the development of transport strategies and transport control as well as operational tasks such as transport technology and data transmission technology. And finally, administrative tasks such as personnel management and resource management are also part of transport logistics.

When planning, controlling and implementing transport logistics services, it is essential to keep an eye on both the supplier network and the distribution network. The supplier network (also known as the supplier pyramid) defines which type of supplier plays a role in the delivery process, e.g. parts, component or system suppliers. The distribution network describes the spatial structure in which the delivery process takes place. It is determined by the production site, warehouse and location of customer demand.
