Glossary

Contract logistics

In simple terms, contract logistics is the long-term transfer of logistics tasks to a logistics service provider, which is regulated by a contract.

How does contract logistics work? The contract logistics company takes on logistics tasks and acts as a link and standardised interface to the client. The service provider thus becomes a “system supplier”, as many different services are usually provided. Contract logistics basically includes all tasks along the entire supply chain (also known as the supply chain).

In addition to traditional services such as transport, warehousing and order picking, additional services such as assembly activities, quality controls, preparation, special packaging or order and customer support are often provided.

These services are also known as “Value Added Services” (VAS), as they create added value for the customer that goes beyond pure logistics.

The aim of contract logistics is to increase the degree of individualisation of logistics services and to continually adapt contract logistics services to the needs of the customer. This is why the co-operation is usually set up for a long period of time. The contract logistics provider becomes an essential partner in supply chain management.
