For smooth production, it is important that parts, components and workpieces are in the right place at the right time. Just-in-time procurement can reduce inventories and storage costs: JIT delivery is transported directly to distribution centers near the storage location. This ensures short delivery times and time flexibility.
The just-in-time principle was developed to minimize warehousing and overproduction. Internal logistics are thus relieved by external suppliers and service providers.
Just-in-sequence production is an extension of the just-in-time process. The just-in-sequence definition is: the right part at the right time in the right place – in the right sequence. This is particularly essential in production lines, such as those prevalent in the automotive industry.
While just-in-time delivery is primarily concerned with having all the materials required for production and assembly on site at the same time at the predefined point in time, the production process itself also plays a central role in JIS: The delivery of each part to be assembled must be made available in the correct quantity and arrangement in the sequence in which the vehicle is to be assembled. An important goal of just-in-sequence delivery is inventory-free procurement logistics.
Optimally coordinated JIS logistics is at the heart of any efficient concept for production planning and production control. However, a number of prerequisites must be met for this to happen.
The most important prerequisites for smooth logistics with just-in-time and just-in-sequence processes are planning and communication.
JIS procurement in particular requires continuous and smooth electronic data exchange between customers and their production and the supplier. Transports and production must be planned in detail, the latter with a production planning system.
In addition, quality assurance is required to ensure as uninterrupted a supply chain as possible and continuous capacity utilization in the event of defects.
In addition to appropriate qualification, suppliers also need sufficient capacity to be able to supply production sites quickly as well as a mature infrastructure for the shortest possible loading and unloading times. In this way, the risk of delivery delays can be circumvented.
Professional just-in-time and, above all, just-in-sequence production has become indispensable in many industries, as it brings numerous benefits to customers and suppliers. Here is an overview of the most important ones.
